There's a pretty nasty Catch-22 for the easy break-in revolving around agents--to hit a major publisher, it's pretty-well required for you to have an agent (many don't accept unsolicited manuscripts, or let them accumulate to save on energy bills in winter months for their interns), but to secure the agent who's best able to help you, it really helps to have something published.
